Imran Khan, the founder and former prime minister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has urged his party candidates to launch their election campaigns or risk losing their tickets to contest the February 8, 2024 general elections. These rallies are critical for Imran Khan and PTI because their election campaign is weak for many reasons, including governmental restrictions, legal challenges, media censorship, and organizational limitations. Imran Khan was ousted as prime minister in April 2022 after losing a vote of no-confidence in the parliament. He faced over 180 charges ranging from rioting to terrorism and was jailed in August 2023 for allegedly selling state gifts.
He has accused the government and the establishment of rigging the elections and conspiring against him. He has also blamed the US and other foreign powers for interfering in Pakistan’s affairs. He has vowed to restore democracy and justice in the country and to fight against corruption and inflation.
However, his party faces many hurdles in the electoral arena. The PTI was banned from using its iconic cricket bat symbol on the ballot papers, which could confuse and alienate its illiterate and rural voters. The party candidates will have to run as independents, using different bizarre symbols such as a rollercoaster or alphabet. This will also affect the party’s eligibility to receive its share of the reserved seats for women and minorities, which are allocated according to the party’s proportion of the overall vote.
Moreover, the PTI has suffered from defections and resignations of many of its leaders and workers, who were either pressured or bribed by the government or the opposition parties.
Therefore, the January 28 rallies are the most important day for PTI, as they will determine its fate and future in the elections. If the candidates of PTI can bring larger numbers of people onto the roads, PTI may make its election campaign stronger and give the impression that it is winning the elections. This could boost the morale and confidence of its supporters and voters and also attract more allies and independents to join its cause. However, if the rallies generate enough enthusiasm and turnout, PTI may retain its momentum and relevance.
