The Pentagon announced on Thursday that Majid Khan, a former Guantanamo Bay detainee, has been relocated to Belize from the US detention center in Cuba. Khan, 42, made headlines for publicly spilling the beans on the torment he faced at the hands of the CIA post the 9/11 attacks on the US.

In 2012, Khan copped to being part of the Al Qaeda group responsible for the 9/11 attacks and was found guilty of plotting murder, terrorism financing, and espionage. Since then, he had been working with the US government as a witness.

Khan was initially taken into custody in Pakistan and was held at a secret CIA facility between 2003 and 2006. He was then transferred to the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay.

Khan’s legal team released a statement on his behalf, in which he expressed gratitude for his new lease on life. “I’m deeply remorseful for my past actions and have taken responsibility for my mistakes. I continuously seek forgiveness from God and those I’ve hurt. I’m truly sorry,” Khan stated.
