Bollywood legend Dharmendra passed away in Mumbai at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy that shaped Indian cinema for decades. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described his death as “the end of an era in Indian cinema.” Known as a “simple man,” Dharmendra earned unwavering love from millions of fans across generations.

Born Dharam Singh Deol on 8 December 1935 in Punjab, he rose from a middle-class background to become one of Bollywood’s most iconic actors. His career spanned over 300 films, ranging from romance to action, comedy, and thrillers. He first gained recognition in Bimal Roy’s Bandini and became a romantic hero opposite top actresses of the era. He then established himself as an action star with hits like Mera Gaon Mera Desh while also performing his own daring stunts.

Dharmendra is best remembered as Veeru in the cult classic Sholay (1975), a role he considered his finest. His on-screen pairing with Hema Malini captivated audiences, and their eventual marriage made headlines. Beyond films, he briefly served as a BJP MP and remained active with his sons in cinema and television.

He received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 and the Padma Bhushan in 2012, yet he valued fans’ love above fame. His passing has prompted tributes from the film fraternity, calling him irreplaceable.
