Pakistan Extends Airspace Ban on Indian Aircraft

[post-views]

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has extended its ban on the use of its airspace by Indian-registered aircraft, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) announced on Tuesday. The restriction will remain in effect until 5:00am on February 24.

The ban covers all Indian-owned, operated, or leased aircraft, including military flights, the authority confirmed. During this period, Pakistani airspace will remain completely closed to Indian carriers, although the PAA did not provide additional details on the decision.

This extension follows an initial airspace restriction imposed amid heightened tensions between Pakistan and India. Since then, the measure has been periodically renewed. The move directly affects Indian airlines operating international routes, forcing them to adjust flight paths and take longer alternative routes to avoid Pakistani airspace.

Aviation analysts say the ban could result in increased fuel costs, longer travel times, and potential disruptions for passengers on routes between India and destinations in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Some carriers have already begun recalculating schedules to minimize operational impact.

The PAA has not indicated whether further extensions may follow, keeping airlines on alert. While tensions have been cited as the primary reason, officials have emphasized that the ban is a precautionary measure for the security of Pakistani airspace.

The decision highlights the continuing strain in bilateral relations and underscores the strategic role of airspace management in regional aviation and security.
