Germany’s defence minister has described the United States’ decision to withdraw 5,000 troops from German territory as “foreseeable,” even as NATO officials move to seek clarity from Washington over the implications of the move. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said the presence of American forces in Europe, particularly in Germany, serves the interests of both sides, underlining the long-standing security partnership within the alliance.
NATO spokesperson Allison Hart confirmed that discussions are underway with the U.S. to better understand the decision, stressing that European allies must continue increasing defence investments and sharing greater responsibility for collective security.
The announcement comes amid heightened political friction between Washington and Berlin, following critical remarks exchanged between leaders over diplomacy and military strategy. The U.S. currently maintains more than 36,000 troops in Germany, its largest European deployment, but President Donald Trump has repeatedly signalled a broader shift of military focus toward the Indo-Pacific region.
Concerns are growing within the 32-member NATO alliance that such moves could weaken deterrence in Europe. Senior U.S. lawmakers have also voiced unease, warning that reducing forces could undermine strategic stability.
Germany, meanwhile, insists it is boosting defence spending significantly and is prepared to assume a larger role in European security cooperation going forward.
