Ethnic violence forces 23,000 to flee in northeast India

IMPHAL, India: Ethnic unrest in northeast India has forced around 23,000 people to flee their homes, according to the army. The violence, which erupted after a protest march by a tribal group, has reportedly killed at least 54 people, with vehicles and houses set on fire.

Despite no new reports of “major violence” overnight, the military has deployed thousands of troops to the Manipur state bordering Myanmar and imposed strict measures, including issuing “shoot-at-sight” orders in “extreme cases,” imposing curfews and cutting the internet.

On Sunday, the army reported no major flare-ups overnight and lifted a curfew between 7-10 am in the Churachandpur district, one of the main flashpoints.
