Saudi Arabia and Canada have resolved their five-year-long dispute over human rights and announced the complete reestablishment of diplomatic relations, putting an end to the tension that resulted in the expulsion of the Canadian ambassador by Riyadh.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, the Canadian government disclosed that the breakthrough came after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau engaged in discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum summit in Bangkok on November 18, 2022.
According to the statement, both parties expressed their desire to restore diplomatic ties “based on mutual respect and shared interests.”

As a sign of goodwill, Ottawa has chosen to reinstate the diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia to their former status, as stated in the communique.
“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Jean-Philippe Linteau as the new ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the statement added.
This diplomatic reconciliation marks a significant step forward for the two nations and opens avenues for cooperation and dialogue in areas of common concern.
