Recording the Pain: Aafia’s Unheard Plea

Pakistani neuroscientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui, who has been imprisoned in the United States for more than a decade, appeared “woeful and petrified” due to the torment she has endured while in custody, according to Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Senator Mushtaq Ahmed.

Senator Ahmed visited Dr Aafia the day after she reunited with her younger sister, Dr Fauzia Siddiqui, after a 20-year separation. The meeting took place at the Federal Medical Center, Carswell in Texas on Wednesday.

During their encounter on Thursday, the senator was accompanied by Clive Stafford-Smith, a prominent human rights advocate who played a role in securing the release of Abdul Rabbani and Ahmed Rabbani from the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison.

Providing a brief account of the meeting, Senator Ahmed vividly depicted the distressing state of the incarcerated doctor, which he observed during their three-hour-long telephonic conversation held behind a glass partition.

“In a small room divided by a glass shield, Dr Aafia, wearing an off-white scarf, khaki dress, and white joggers, engaged in a three-hour-long telephonic dialogue – continuously recorded,” he shared on Twitter.
