Airports worldwide have undergone a remarkable transformation. Gone are the days when they were merely transit points for air travel; now they boast a plethora of amenities and activities to cater to passengers’ needs while they await their flights. However, in Pakistan, we are still struggling to grasp the fundamentals of passenger-centric airport management. This formed the crux of the presentation delivered by the Managing Director of the Civil Aviation Administration to the Senate’s Standing Committee on Aviation on Monday. According to the head of the CAA, representatives from various agencies assigned to airports, particularly Customs, the Airport Security Force, and the Anti-Narcotics Force, have been implicated in the harassment, intimidation, and extortion of passengers. He described the prevailing “aggressive atmosphere” as reminiscent of living in a military compound. While countless individuals have shared personal accounts of unprofessional conduct by airport officials, it is imperative for the government to address these concerns when they are raised by the head of the aviation regulator during a Senate briefing. Some senators even recounted their own unpleasant encounters with inhospitable airport staff.
The sorry state of affairs described by the CAA head raises serious questions about the level of professionalism and accountability within our airports. Passengers, who should be treated with respect and courtesy, are instead subjected to unwarranted harassment and intimidation. This not only tarnishes the image of our airports but also creates a negative experience for travelers, both domestic and international. It is disheartening to see that instead of offering a warm welcome and ensuring a smooth travel experience, some airport officials choose to engage in unscrupulous practices.
The responsibility for rectifying this situation lies with the relevant authorities and agencies involved in airport management. It is crucial that immediate action be taken to curb the misconduct of officials who abuse their power and exploit passengers for personal gain. The need of the hour is a comprehensive overhaul of the system to establish a culture of professionalism, transparency, and accountability.
To achieve this, it is imperative to implement stringent measures that deter and penalize those who engage in misconduct. Passengers, whether arriving or departing, find themselves having to establish their innocence to these inhospitable representatives of the state. It is imperative that all travelers, be they local tourists, expatriates returning to visit loved ones, or adventurous foreign tourists exploring Pakistan, are greeted with a professional and welcoming ambiance at our aviation hubs.
While it is essential to prevent the transportation of illegal and hazardous items, and officials must remain vigilant for individuals traveling with counterfeit documents, these factors should never serve as excuses for treating ordinary travelers as suspects or, worse, extorting money from those already anxious. A warm greeting accompanied by a genuine smile can significantly contribute to projecting a “soft” national image, replacing the current scowling and probing faces that passengers encounter. Moreover, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) must undertake significant efforts to revamp the infrastructure at Pakistan’s airports, aiming to enhance the overall passenger experience. The introduction of private management of airport facilities might facilitate positive changes in administration, while those responsible for overseeing aviation-related security agencies must instill a culture of respect for passengers among their personnel.
In order to eradicate such issues, it is crucial to implement comprehensive reforms that prioritize customer satisfaction and professionalism.
