US Mediators Preparing Cease-fire and Hostage-swap Deal to End Israel-Hamas War

An unnamed US official revealed on Friday that mediators are getting ready to implement a cease-fire in Gaza and a deal to swap hostages in order to put an end to the 10-month-long conflict between Israel and Hamas. The official stated that the proposal currently being considered acts to bridge the gaps between Israel and Hamas.

A new “implementation cell” is being established in Cairo, focusing on the logistics of the proposed deal, such as the release of hostages, providing humanitarian aid for Gaza, and ensuring that the terms of the deal are met.

After two days of talks in Qatar, mediators expressed hope for an imminent deal and plan to reconvene in Cairo next week to finalize the agreement. Although Israel appreciated the mediators’ efforts, Hamas did not seem enthusiastic about the proposed deal. Nonetheless, US President Joe Biden expressed optimism, stating, “We are closer than we’ve ever been” to reaching an agreement.

The US has presented a proposal to bridge the remaining gaps between the two sides, aiming for senior officials from involved governments to meet in Cairo before the end of next week to conclude the deal. However, Hamas has indicated that the latest proposal significantly differs from the previous ones they had agreed to, casting doubts on reaching an agreement.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken plans to travel to Israel over the weekend to continue diplomatic efforts to reach a cease-fire and to urge all parties to avoid escalation. Meanwhile, the British and French foreign ministers made a joint trip to Israel to intensify international diplomacy to prevent the war from spreading.

The push for an end to the Israel-Hamas war comes as the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 40,000, while there are fears of potential attacks on Israel from Iran and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon. International mediators believe that a deal between Israel and Hamas to halt the fighting and secure the release of Israeli hostages is the best hope for calming tensions.

The war started when Hamas-led militants stormed across the heavily guarded border on Oct. 7, resulting in civilian casualties and abductions. The retaliatory offensive from Israel has led to a significant number of Palestinian deaths, with ongoing efforts to reach a cease-fire deal and halt the offensive operations.
