The army has suggested that former Prime Minister Imran Khan may face a military trial for allegedly using military personnel for personal or political gain. During a media briefing, military spokesman Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry referenced the conditions under which a civilian could be tried under military law, hinting at a potential trial for Imran Khan.
The possibility of Imran Khan facing a military trial surfaced after he sought intervention from the Islamabad High Court to preempt a possible court martial. This follows concerns that he might be implicated in the May 9 violence, for which FIRs were filed against him in Rawalpindi and speculation that former spy chief Faiz Hameed might turn an approver against him.
Gen Chaudhry also addressed the arrest of retired Gen Hameed, highlighting allegations that he had contravened the Constitution and laws to advance the interests of certain political elements for personal gains.
Additionally, Gen Chaudhry emphasized that the army does not pursue any political agenda and maintains a professional relationship with the government as stated in the Constitution and the law. He urged civilian authorities to strengthen the criminal justice system and develop a robust narrative against extremism and terrorism, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts in combating terrorism.
Furthermore, in the context of counter-terrorism operations, Gen Chaudhry provided statistics on intelligence-based operations and the killing of alleged extremists while expressing the military’s commitment to continue the fight against terrorism. He also highlighted the need for civilian authorities to fulfil their responsibilities in the post-clearance phases of counter-insurgency efforts to prevent the resurgence of terrorist activities.
