On the Brink of Nuclear Confrontation

One year to October 7, and we find ourselves potentially at the start of a nuclear confrontation. With diplomatic efforts failing, the United States is now funding Israel’s “limited incursion” into Lebanon, whether willingly or not.

Given Israel’s history with such incursions, we can predict a violent and reckless outcome with no clear end in sight. Currently, over a million people are displaced in Lebanon, with thousands killed, adding to the 41,000 deaths in Gaza.

Watching four seasons of ‘Fauda’ on Netflix couldn’t have prepared me for the real-life horror unfolding now. The Palestinian struggle has been ongoing for 80 years, and Pakistan understands the fight for self-determination and freedom.

Without sanctions or an arms embargo, Netanyahu is unlikely to stop. He shows no interest in a ceasefire and seems to believe he’s on a winning streak. This isn’t unprecedented; we’ve seen Western nations invade sovereign countries like Afghanistan and Iraq under the guise of “democratic” ideals.

It’s not that we haven’t seen this before, but nothing prepared us for the sheer brutality and impunity compressed into a few months. After the failed Iraq invasion, former US President George W. Bush left office in disgrace, and The New York Times apologized for not maintaining journalistic integrity and succumbing to war propaganda.

Now, thousands are dead, including those buried under rubble, and over three million people are displaced in Gaza and Lebanon. Gaza’s economy has plummeted by 90%, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with schools, farmland, and infrastructure decimated.
