A New Dawn for Governance Reform

[post-views]

Editorial

Republic Policy Think Tank has launched an ambitious and much-needed initiative — the Governance Reform Series, a trilogy of books that confronts Pakistan’s deepest institutional dysfunctions. The series includes Fixing the Executive Branch of Government in Pakistan, Fixing the Legislative Branch of Government in Pakistan, and Fixing the Judicial Branch of Government in Pakistan. The first volume, on the executive, is already in print, and it is nothing short of groundbreaking.

For decades, the debate on governance in Pakistan has been monopolised by those who benefited from the system — senior bureaucrats, donor-funded consultants, and institutional insiders who defended the status quo. Fixing the Executive Branch breaks that monopoly. It questions the sacred assumptions of bureaucratic supremacy and challenges the civil service structure that has long stood above democratic accountability.

The book opens a national conversation on issues long avoided — bureaucratic governance, administrative federalism, and local government reform. It argues that Pakistan cannot truly progress unless power, resources, and responsibility are devolved to the people through constitutionally grounded local institutions.
