The surrender of Sarfraz Bungulzai, a leader of the Baloch National Army (BNA), offers a potential turning point in Balochistan’s history. However, capitalizing on this opportunity demands a multifaceted approach that extends beyond security measures and acknowledges the province’s complex situation.
While Bungulzai’s statement implicating India in “conspiracies” deserves due investigation, solely focusing on external actors will not yield lasting solutions. Pakistan’s security agencies must utilize the information he and his associates provide, but concurrently acknowledge the long-standing social and political factors fueling discontent in Balochistan.
For decades, Baloch communities have faced marginalization and a sense of disenfranchisement. Ignoring these grievances has hampered development and fueled resentment, leaving some susceptible to extremist ideologies. The government must prioritize addressing these issues through targeted initiatives that improve socio-economic conditions, promote equitable resource distribution, and foster genuine political inclusion.
Balochistan’s rich resources should translate into prosperity for its people, not merely fuel for conflict. The province needs significant investment in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and job creation. Such development opportunities can provide alternatives to violence and offer hope for a brighter future.
The surrender of BNA members cannot be viewed in isolation. While it holds potential, expecting widespread disarmament solely based on this instance is unrealistic. Only sustained and visible efforts by the federal and provincial governments to demonstrably improve the lives of all Baloch citizens will encourage others to follow suit.
Terms like “accidental insurgents” highlight the desperation that drives some to the path of violence. The government must address the root causes of such despair by offering a realistic and concrete alternative. Instead of viewing them solely as enemies, efforts should focus on reintegration and offering a legitimate stake in the province’s future.
The momentum created by Bungulzai’s surrender presents a valuable opportunity for progress. By prioritizing comprehensive development initiatives, addressing historical grievances, and demonstrating a genuine commitment to inclusivity, Pakistan can chart a new course for Balochistan, leaving behind the cycle of violence and paving the way for a future of peace and prosperity for all. lastly, there is a need to fulfill the political and cultural demands of the populations of Balochistan in line with constitution and federalism.
