Flight passengers in Germany faced delays and cancellations as workers at eight airports staged a strike on Friday (Feb 17) to demand better pay, affecting around 295,000 passengers and over 2,300 flights.

The Verdi trade union called for a full-day walkout, which caused Lufthansa, the largest carrier in Germany, to cancel more than 1,300 flights at its two busiest hubs, Frankfurt and Munich. According to Verdi, the strike is expected to have a significant impact on domestic air traffic, leading to delays, cancellations, and even a partial shutdown of air traffic.

The ADV, the German airport association, called the strike action “completely unacceptable” and urged that “solutions must be found at the negotiating table and not at the expense of passengers,” said ADV chief Ralph Beisel in a statement.
