In Islamabad, President Dr Arif Alvi has called for an urgent meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja on February 20 to discuss the announcement of a date for fresh general elections.
The meeting will focus on consultation on the terms of Section 57(1) of the Elections Act, 2017, which stipulates that the president must “announce the date or dates of the general elections after consultation with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).”
The President expressed his dissatisfaction with the ECP’s apparent “indifference” and inaction on the matter in a letter to the CEC, stating that his previous letter from February 8 had gone unanswered.
