Arsenal hands Manchester City a shocking defeat, shaking up Premier League title race

Last week, when Manchester City won against Arsenal and claimed the top spot in the Premier League, many thought that the champions would have an easy run towards their fifth title in six seasons. However, the north Londoners proved on Saturday that the race for the title is still wide open. Moreover, City’s defence of their title is further complicated by the fact that their rivals Manchester United are not going away quietly.

This is the time of the season when a team led by Pep Guardiola typically shifts to top gear. In the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons, a 15-game winning streak in each campaign, which began in the middle, helped propel City to league title glory.

Last Wednesday, against league leaders Arsenal, City appeared to be at their best as they clinched a 3-1 victory to move ahead of the Gunners. This performance left their title contenders dreading the worst.

However, Saturday’s results saw the pendulum swing once again. Wednesday’s loss appeared to have harmed Arsenal’s confidence, as they were trailing 2-1 against Aston Villa in the day’s early kick-off. Demonstrating the resilience of champions, they scored three goals without conceding, including two in stoppage time, to regain their position at the top of the table.
