While the country has become a global hub for freelancers, with over 1.5 million active workers contributing more than $3.2 billion to export earnings in FY2023-24 , the advent of GenAI presents both opportunities and challenges.
GenAI technologies, such as ChatGPT and Midjourney, are automating tasks traditionally performed by freelancers, including content creation, basic programming, and design. This automation has led to a decline in job postings for these roles, with some studies estimating a drop of over 20% . However, the demand for specialized skills in GenAI-related fields, such as AI content creation and prompt engineering, has risen. Freelancers with expertise in these areas are reportedly earning up to 40% more than their counterparts in non-AI roles.

In response to this shift, Pakistan has implemented several initiatives to equip its workforce with the necessary skills. Programs like DigiSkills.pk and the E-Rozgaar Program offer training in digital skills and freelancing, aiming to prepare individuals for the evolving job market. Additionally, universities such as NUST and GIKI conduct AI boot camps to provide hands-on experience in advanced technologies.
Despite these efforts, challenges remain. The informal sector, which has traditionally provided opportunities for marginalized groups, faces difficulties in adapting to the digital economy. Moreover, the rapid pace of technological change requires continuous learning and adaptation.
