Australia unleashes massive military overhaul to combat China

In a bid to counter the increasing aggression of China, Australia has announced its biggest defence shakeup in decades. The strategic review, which was released by Defence Minister Richard Marles, has called for a shift towards long-range deterrence by using missiles, submarines, and cyber tools to keep enemies at bay. The review highlighted the growing risks of military escalation or miscalculation and warned that China’s military build-up is the largest and most ambitious of any country since World War II.

To counter the threat, Australia’s military will develop the capability to strike from air, land, and sea, while also strengthening its northern bases and increasing the number of troops.

Australia’s army, in particular, will see a significant shift towards coastal defense, especially in the vast north of the country, and the review aims to change the calculus so that no potential aggressor can conclude that the benefits of conflict outweigh the risks. In response to the threat, Australia has announced the development of stealthy, long-range nuclear-powered submarines that could retaliate with a barrage of cruise missiles and little warning.
