Bangladeshi Student Group Threatens to Restart Protests Unless Leaders Are Released

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

A student group in Bangladesh has announced plans to resume protests if several of their leaders are not released from custody. The protests, which led to a deadly police crackdown and widespread unrest, resulted in at least 205 deaths last week. The group, known as Students Against Discrimination, initiated the protests in response to civil service job quotas. They have called for the release of their leaders and the withdrawal of cases against them.

The group’s chief, Nahid Islam, and other members have been detained, prompting the group to consider escalating their protests if their demands are not met. The situation remains tense as thousands of protesters have been arrested, and a curfew and army patrols are still in place. The government’s response to the demands of the student group, a response that could potentially shape the future of the country, will be closely watched as the country grapples with the aftermath of the unrest.
