Battle of the Skies: Drones Clash Over Moscow

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Amid escalating hostilities resulting in significant casualties on both sides, Russian authorities claimed on Tuesday that Kyiv had orchestrated an “act of terrorism” by launching an assault on Moscow using a fleet of at least five unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which wreaked havoc on the nation’s airspace after being intercepted by air defenses.

The Russian Ministry of Defense revealed that four out of the five drones were successfully downed by their forces, while the fifth was neutralized and crash-landed in the Odintsovo district of the Moscow region.

Fortunately, no injuries or damages have been reported thus far.

Russian media outlets highlighted that two of the drones were intercepted near a village located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of the Kremlin, while another drone was detected in the neighboring Kaluga region.

In the aftermath of the incident, landings and takeoffs at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport were temporarily suspended for several hours in the early morning, causing disruptions to flight schedules. However, operations resumed to normalcy after 0500 GMT, with some flights from Russia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt redirected to alternative airports.

Additionally, reports indicated that one drone was successfully shot down near the town of Kubinka, situated about 63 kilometers (40 miles) west of Moscow, where a Russian air base is located.
