On April 10th, 2024, a momentous occasion unfolded as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida embarked on his official state visit to the White House, hosted by United States President Joe Biden. This visit, the fifth of its kind during Biden’s presidency, was a testament to the growing importance of strengthening defence ties between the two nations.
The visit held profound strategic implications, aligning with the administration’s priorities. Notably, three of the four previous state visits had underscored the Indo-Pacific region, a strategic move to counterbalance China’s growing military and economic assertiveness. The visit also served as a powerful reminder of the enduring partnership between the US and Japan, with a staggering 70 cooperation agreements discussed in defence, space, and technology.
At a joint press conference, Biden unveiled what he deemed the most substantial advancement in military ties between the two countries since the alliance’s inception. The US and Japan are set to modernise their military command and control structures in Japan, a move that will significantly enhance interoperability and planning. Additionally, a network of air missiles and defence architecture will be established by Japan, Australia, and the US, further bolstering the coordination of allies in the region.
In addition to strengthening the Quad strategic grouping, which includes the US, India, South Korea, and Australia, the Biden administration has also created the AUKUS security partnership with Australia and the United Kingdom. The US has also been increasing cooperation with key allies in the region, with the leaders of the US, Japan, and the Philippines set to hold a trilateral meeting.
The visit also addressed other crucial issues, including North Korea, Taiwan Strait security, and Ukraine’s war. Biden and Kishida also announced a joint partnership to accelerate the development and commercialisation of nuclear fusion, an extremely high-yield, low-waste form of energy production that scientists have been trying to harness for decades.
Overall, the visit marked a significant step in strengthening the partnership between the US and Japan and increasing cooperation between crucial allies in the Indo-Pacific region.
