Biden pushes for talks with North Korea, despite Kim Jong Un’s silence

In a bid to ease the growing concern over North Korea’s expanding missile and bomb capabilities, the United States has vowed to provide South Korea with more intelligence on its nuclear planning in case of a potential conflict.

The assurance, which also included South Korea’s reiteration not to pursue nuclear armament, followed a meeting between US President Joe Biden and South Korean leader Yoon Suk Yeol at the White House.

The talks covered various topics including North Korea, trade, semiconductor chips, and the Ukraine conflict. In a joint press conference, Yoon announced that they had agreed to enhance South Korea’s defenses against North Korea’s threats. Both countries pledged to have immediate consultations in the event of a nuclear attack by North Korea, and will respond promptly, overwhelmingly, and decisively using the full force of their alliance, including the United States’ nuclear weapons.

Biden reaffirmed his offer for North Korea to engage in dialogue regarding its nuclear and missile programs, which North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ignored. North Korea’s mission to the United Nations has yet to provide a comment on the matter.
