Biden arrived in the disaster-stricken region on Saturday following the devastating impact of Hurricane Idalia, which left widespread devastation and suffering in its wake.
Despite DeSantis’ absence, President Biden expressed no disappointment, acknowledging DeSantis’s assistance during his Florida trip. DeSantis’ spokesperson clarified on Friday that the governor had no intentions of meeting with Biden, citing the significant security preparations required for such a meeting, which could disrupt ongoing recovery efforts.
During his visit, President Joe Biden conducted an aerial survey and received briefings from local officials and first responders in Live Oak, a town severely affected by the hurricane. After witnessing the destruction and the downed trees, he emphasized that anyone “sensible” would recognize the reality of climate change. Nevertheless, the shadow of politics loomed over his visit.
