(CNN) – Unprecedented infernos have ravaged over 10 million hectares (24.7 million acres) of land in Canada this year, defying even the bleakest forecasts of scientists, as revealed by government data on Saturday.
This staggering statistic surpasses the previous record set in 1989 when 7.3 million hectares were engulfed in flames over the span of an entire year, according to data from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC).
To put it into perspective, the area charred in a mere six and a half months is roughly equivalent to the size of Portugal or Iceland.
Since January, a total of 4,088 fires have erupted, with several of them scorching hundreds of thousands of hectares.
Tragically, the wildfires have displaced over 150,000 individuals, and the loss of a young firefighter on Thursday serves as a grim reminder of the perilous battle against the blazes.

“We’re confronted with vast expanses,” shared Colonel Philippe Sansa, who leads a contingent of French firefighters assisting in the hard-hit regions of northern Quebec, in an interview with CNN.
