Blood, Sweat, and Gains: Ukraine’s Tenacious Fight

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Ukraine has adopted a cautious stance as it wages a counteroffensive to reclaim Russian-occupied territory, recognizing that each step forward comes at a heavy cost. In a frank acknowledgment, the Ukrainian president and a U.S. general admitted that the price of progress is paid in blood.

Addressing the audience at the National Press Club in Washington, Army General Mark Milley, the top U.S. military officer, described the painstaking advance of the counteroffensive. He emphasized the challenging terrain, stating, “We’re navigating through treacherous minefields, making steady headway—500 meters a day, 1,000 meters a day, 2,000 meters a day, and so forth.”

Milley expressed no surprise that progress was slower than anticipated by analysts and computers, underscoring the grim reality of warfare. “The battlefield is not a piece of paper. It’s where real people sacrifice their lives. It’s where frontline soldiers and courageous individuals in vehicles face the brutality of high explosives.”

Emphasizing the arduous nature of the mission, he remarked, “I’ve consistently warned that this would be a protracted and grueling battle, lasting six, eight, or even 10 weeks. We cannot harbor any illusions about the harsh realities ahead.”

Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy acknowledged that the counteroffensive was proceeding slower than desired, without delving into specifics. Although Ukraine has liberated a cluster of villages, covering an area of 130 square kilometers (50 square miles) in the south, this constitutes only a fraction of the territory still under Russian control.

The road to reclaiming Ukraine’s sovereignty is fraught with sacrifice, and every gain is hard-won. The nation remains resolute, demonstrating that it will not relent until its occupied lands are fully restored.
