A man who bravely confronted an armed attacker during the deadly Bondi Beach shooting has been identified as 43 year old Ahmed al Ahmed. Video footage verified by independent sources shows Mr Ahmed running towards one of the gunmen, wrestling the firearm from him, and forcing the attacker to retreat. His quick and courageous action unfolded during a violent assault that police have since declared a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community during a Hanukkah event.

Mr Ahmed, a fruit shop owner and father of two, was shot during the struggle and remains hospitalized. According to his family, he sustained bullet wounds to his arm and hand and underwent surgery. Speaking to 7News Australia, his cousin Mustafa said doctors believe he is stable. He described Mr Ahmed as a hero and said the family hopes for his full recovery after a traumatic night.

The shooting claimed the lives of eleven people as more than one thousand attendees gathered to celebrate Hanukkah. Police believe two gunmen carried out the attack. One attacker was killed at the scene, while the second remains in critical condition. Authorities are also investigating whether additional individuals were involved in planning or supporting the attack.

Footage of Mr Ahmed’s intervention has spread widely online. The video shows him tackling the gunman near a pedestrian bridge, seizing the weapon, and then raising his hand to signal to police that he was not an attacker. Another gunman can be seen continuing to fire nearby, highlighting the danger Mr Ahmed willingly faced.

Australian leaders praised his bravery. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said many lives were saved because of Mr Ahmed’s actions. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese added that Australians had once again shown extraordinary courage by running towards danger to protect others.
