Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for China and Brazil to set a global example of “unity and self-reliance” for the Global South, signalling deeper strategic alignment between the two major emerging economies. The remarks came during a phone call on Monday with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, according to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency.

Xi told Lula that bilateral ties were at “their best in history,” with both nations’ development strategies progressing in close alignment. He reaffirmed China’s support for Brazil’s sovereignty and legitimate interests, urging countries to unite against unilateralism and protectionism. The leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in health, oil and gas, the digital economy, and satellite technology, while continuing to identify new business opportunities between their economies.

The talks come amid heightened trade tensions with the United States, as President Donald Trump imposes heavy tariffs on Brazilian goods and maintains levies on Chinese exports. Both Xi and Lula signalled readiness to deepen cooperation among emerging economies to counter such economic pressures.
