China extends hand to help revive Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations

China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang has expressed China’s willingness to help mediate peace talks between Israel and Palestine in separate phone calls with the two countries’ top diplomats, according to state media Xinhua on Tuesday.

The move is part of China’s recent efforts to position itself as a regional mediator. During the calls with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki on Monday, Qin urged for the resumption of peace talks and offered China’s support in facilitating the process.

He also emphasised China’s push for a “two-state solution” in both calls. The stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations have been ongoing since 2014. China has recently been on a diplomatic offensive, including brokering the restoration of ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia in March.
