Cricket Legends Call for Better Prison Treatment for Imran Khan

[post-views]

Several of the world’s most respected cricket captains, including India’s Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, have joined other former international leaders of the game in urging improved prison conditions for former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan, describing him as “one of the finest all-rounders” in cricket history.

Imran, 73, has been jailed since August 2023 following multiple convictions that he maintains were politically motivated after his removal from office in 2022. Concerns about his health recently intensified when his lawyer informed the Supreme Court that his vision in one eye had significantly deteriorated. A medical board later reported some improvement after treatment.

The petition, led by former Australian captain Greg Chappell, has also been signed by prominent figures such as Allan Border, Steve Waugh, England’s Nasser Hussain, and West Indies legend Clive Lloyd, among others. They expressed deep concern over reports of his health and detention conditions, calling for dignified treatment, proper medical care, and full legal access.

The statement emphasised that while cricket rivalries may be fierce, respect endures beyond the field. Meanwhile, Imran’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, welcomed the support and urged more cricketers worldwide to speak out. Pakistani cricket icons, including Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar, have also voiced concern over his health.
