[post-views]

Sri Lanka is facing one of its worst disasters in years as deadly floods triggered by Cyclone Ditwah have torn through Colombo and surrounding regions. The Disaster Management Centre confirmed that 193 people have died while 228 remain missing, as emergency teams struggle to reach damaged areas.

Officials say the cyclone’s weeklong rains caused widespread flooding and mudslides, particularly in central districts where destruction is becoming clearer as debris is cleared. Rising waters along the Kelani River continue to threaten low-lying neighbourhoods in the capital despite the cyclone having passed.

Residents described scenes of panic as families fled submerged homes in Colombo suburbs. More devastation has surfaced in towns like Manampitiya, where receding waters have exposed heavy damage to homes, shops and public infrastructure, leaving communities in urgent need of assistance.

The crisis has also created a medical emergency, with blood banks reporting dangerously low supplies as collection drives were halted due to the flooding. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has declared a national emergency and appealed for global support, prompting immediate aid responses from India, Pakistan and Japan.
