Diplomatic Showdown: China and US Lock Horns Over Asia-Pacific Security

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu voiced his concerns about the resurgence of a Cold War mentality in the Asia-Pacific region during a high-level security summit in Singapore.

Addressing the pinnacle security summit in Singapore on Saturday, Li indirectly criticized the United States for ratcheting up an arms race and meddling in the internal affairs of other nations. He emphasized the imperative of fostering mutual respect instead of resorting to bullying and hegemony.

In response, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin rebuked China for rebuffing military talks, leading to a deadlock between the two superpowers concerning Taiwan and territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

Relations between the US and China are on edge due to a multitude of issues, including Taiwan, the South China Sea, and constraints on semiconductor chip exports imposed by President Joe Biden.

Despite exchanging handshakes during the dinner, Li and Austin failed to delve into deeper discussions, disregarding the US’s repeated calls for more military exchanges.
