ISLAMABAD: Asif Ali Khan Durrani, a seasoned diplomat with 32 years of experience, has been designated as a special envoy for Afghanistan, as the relationship between the two neighboring countries continues to be intricate.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed Durrani to the role two months after it became vacant in March when his predecessor Mohammad Sadiq stepped down after a three-year tenure. Sadiq’s resignation followed unsuccessful peace negotiations with the banned group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Kabul, which were originally initiated by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government.

Durrani’s appointment comes at a crucial time as discussions are underway regarding the expansion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan. The objective is to establish connectivity between the landlocked Central Asian region and the rest of the world through Pakistan and Afghanistan.
During a trilateral dialogue earlier this month, involving the foreign ministers of China, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, the three nations emphasized the significance of exploring practical pathways to revive the Afghan economy. They highlighted the need to generate economic activity within Afghanistan itself.
