Disney is reportedly preparing to launch a standalone ESPN streaming service in the coming years.

As per reports of The Wall Street Journal, Disney has started laying the groundwork for the new plan. The company is currently in talks with cable providers and sports leagues. There is no specific timeline yet regarding its release.

Currently, the monthly streaming service ESPN+ doesn’t offer access to the ESPN channel itself and does not include NBA and NFL telecasts, which are only available on TV.

The network plans to shift the content to streaming through the new service. Once the standalone streaming service goes live, ESPN will still be available on traditional TV platforms, giving tough competition to cable providers.

As of now, the project is code-named ‘Flagship’. Disney and ESPN have been planning to launch a standalone service for a while now. Both companies are now finally putting the plan into action.
