Dubai International Airport Sets Record with 92.3 Million Passengers in 2024 Amid Economic Boom

Dubai International Airport has achieved a remarkable milestone, with a record-breaking 92.3 million passengers passing through its terminals last year, as announced by its operator on Thursday. This figure surpasses the previous record of 89.1 million passengers set in 2018, showcasing the continued growth of the Gulf city’s economy.

Despite challenges such as regional instability due to the Gaza conflict and disruptions caused by unprecedented floods in April 2024, Dubai’s airport has remained resilient. The city, strategically located between Asia, Europe, and Africa, has maintained its position as the world’s busiest international air hub for the past decade.

Dubai’s ruler and UAE Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, praised the airport’s success, describing it as a “global success story” and revealed plans to increase the number of international destinations from the current 272 to 400 in the future.

Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths expressed confidence that the airport could surpass 100 million passengers by 2027, further cementing its position as a key global travel hub.

As Dubai prepares for increased competition from a major new airport under construction in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the city is also planning a $35 billion expansion project. This includes the relocation of operations to Al Maktoum International Airport, located on the outskirts of the city.

Dubai’s rapid growth in trade, tourism, and business has also fueled a booming real-estate market and soaring population, driven by the UAE’s ongoing efforts to diversify its economy away from oil dependence.
