The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has predicted that Eid-ul-Fitr in 2025 is likely to be observed on Monday, March 31, based on scientific assessments and astronomical calculations. The prediction was made following a detailed study of the Shawwal 1446 AH Crescent visibility.
Suparco’s analysis indicates that the moon sighting is highly probable on March 30, 2025, meaning Ramazan will complete 29 days, and Eid will most likely fall on March 31. The new Moon (conjunction) for Shawwal is expected to occur on March 29, 2025, at 15:58 PST. However, crescent visibility depends on several factors, including the moon’s age, its angular separation from the sun, sunset altitude, and weather conditions.
In Pakistan, on March 30, 2025 (29th Ramzan), the moon will be about 27 hours old, with a visibility probability of 2%. Scientific calculations suggest that the crescent will be clearly visible to the naked eye.
In contrast, Saudi Arabia and the Middle East are unlikely to see the crescent on March 29 due to the moon’s age, making March 30 the more likely date for moon sighting in those regions. As a result, Eid will also likely be celebrated on March 31 in Saudi Arabia.
While Suparco’s prediction is grounded in scientific data, the final decision will rest with the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, which will consider eyewitness accounts and local weather conditions before formally declaring the start of Shawwal 1446 AH.
