The European Union (EU) has announced that it is providing €700,000 in humanitarian aid to Pakistan following devastating flooding and landslides that have caused loss of life and significant damage to infrastructure and livelihoods across the country. The aid will be focused on addressing the immediate needs of vulnerable communities in the worst affected regions, including Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh.
Taheeni Thammannagoda, responsible for the EU’s humanitarian programs in Pakistan, conveyed the EU’s condolences for the lives lost and the challenges faced by communities due to the heavy monsoon rains. The EU’s funding will be channelled through the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to provide multi-sectoral assistance, including water and sanitation, temporary shelter and essential relief items to those most affected.
This aid comes in addition to the €11 million already allocated by the EU for ongoing humanitarian support and disaster preparedness efforts in Pakistan.
