The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings to three baby formula manufacturers, urging them to enhance their measures for controlling bacterial contamination.
The FDA has reassured the public that these warnings should not disrupt the supply of baby formula. However, they serve as a clear indication of the agency’s increased scrutiny of the industry, a response to a series of recalls that occurred last year.
The three companies that have received warning letters are ByHeart Inc., Mead Johnson Nutrition (a subsidiary of Reckitt Benckiser Group), and Perrigo’s Wisconsin unit. The FDA’s concern arises from what it perceives as inadequate procedures in place to prevent bacterial contamination during the manufacturing process.
