FDA Warns of Premature Infants’ Health Risks from Probiotic Products

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has raised concerns regarding injuries and, tragically, one death among premature infants who were administered probiotic products while in the hospital.

Probiotic products, designed to complement regular feeding and containing live microorganisms like bacteria or yeast, have the potential to result in invasive and potentially life-threatening infections or diseases, the FDA cautioned on Thursday.

The FDA’s statement disclosed that one infant death in the current year, coupled with over two dozen injury reports since 2018, could be linked to the use of these supplements. The agency is actively investigating additional cases of injuries and fatalities.

It’s important to note that the FDA has not granted approval for any probiotic products to be used as drugs or treatments for infants.
