Manuel Feller gives Austria hope for first gold at World Ski Championships in Courchevel by taking the lead in the first run of men’s slalom on Sunday.
Under sunny and warm conditions, Feller, a world slalom silver medalist in St. Moritz in 2017, completed the L’Eclipse piste in 46.93 seconds.
Greece’s AJ Ginnis and Norway’s Lucas Braathen followed in joint second, just 0.13 seconds behind. Despite being a five-time World Cup circuit winner, Braathen had an emergency appendectomy three weeks ago, making it a surprise if he wins. Winning the world alpine ski championship would be even more surprising for Greece, who has never achieved this feat.
Although born in Athens, Ginnis moved to the US at the age of 15 and represented his adopted country before switching allegiance. Even so, Greece has discovered a real talent.
