Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, launched a scathing attack on Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Umar Ata Bandial, for his inclusion in the five-member larger bench assigned to handle petitions against the inquiry commission investigating audio leaks involving judges.
In a fiery speech delivered in the National Assembly, Asif warned that if Parliament’s authority was challenged and its writ came under attack, it would not hesitate to retaliate. He emphasized the independence of the judiciary and stated that it could not dictate terms to the parliament.
Expressing his disappointment, the defence minister pointed out that the government had established a commission, but its operations were halted by the chief justice. He also mentioned the personal connection, highlighting that the matter involved the chief justice’s mother-in-law.
Asif, a prominent leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), expressed his hope that the chief justice would have allowed the commission to handle the issue.
