Zero Terrain, an Irish company, has offered Pakistan the opportunity to establish a 500 MW electricity storage system that will be available for 12 hours, according to sources. The company, known for developing modular grid-scale pumped storage systems, plans to leverage elevation differences between surface and deep underground reservoirs to provide a solution for long-duration electricity storage. The system works by pumping water to the surface during periods of surplus electricity and releasing it to drive turbines, generating a stable supply of electricity when needed.

The technology offered by Zero Terrain aligns with Pakistan’s strategic energy goals of integrating renewable energy into its energy mix, aiming for 20 per cent renewable energy by 2025 and 30 per cent by 2030. As Pakistan increases its reliance on wind and solar power, energy storage becomes crucial for balancing the variable output of these renewable sources. Zero Terrain’s system, with its ability to provide up to 24 hours of storage capacity, is well-suited to complement Pakistan’s renewable energy targets.

Furthermore, the company’s modular and flexible design allows it to be deployed in various locations, supporting Pakistan’s grid in both remote and urban areas.

In addition to supporting Pakistan’s renewable energy targets, Zero Terrain’s system offers environmental and social benefits. Its small surface reservoir requirements and the ability to use locally sourced water make it well-suited to Pakistan’s environmental conditions. The system’s small environmental footprint aligns with Pakistan’s goal of minimizing the environmental impact of new infrastructure projects.

The prototype for Zero Terrain is currently under development at Paldiski Bay in Estonia, where a 500 MW, 12-hour storage (6,000 MWh) plant is being constructed.
