PARIS: In the wake of widespread unrest, including the torching of buildings, car fires, and rampant looting, France asserted on Friday that it remains open to employing “all available strategies” to bring about peace and order.

The tragic death of a 17-year-old North African youth, captured on video during a routine traffic stop, has reignited long-standing tensions among marginalized urban communities, characterized by a mix of races and economic backgrounds. These communities have long voiced grievances over incidents of police brutality and systemic racism within law enforcement.

Authorities reported over 200 police officers injured and 875 individuals detained during the tumultuous night, as rioters clashed fiercely with law enforcement personnel across various towns and cities in France. The violence encompassed the destruction of buildings, the incineration of buses and other vehicles, and widespread looting of businesses.

Addressing the situation, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne stressed that the government remains open to exploring “all possible avenues” in restoring peace. In a tweet, she condemned the violence as “unacceptable and unjustifiable,” echoing the sentiments expressed earlier.
