Hijab Battle: France Stands Firm on Headscarf Ban

The Constitutional Council issued a declaration affirming that “sporting federations, entrusted with ensuring the smooth functioning of public services have the authority to enforce a requirement of neutrality on their players during competitions and sporting events, in order to maintain the harmony of matches and prevent clashes or confrontations.”

Furthermore, the statement emphasized that the French Football Federation’s (FFF) rule prohibiting “any visible indication or attire that explicitly signifies political, philosophical, religious, or union affiliation” during gameplay was “fitting and proportionate.”

In response, a collective of Muslim female footballers, known as the “Hijabeuses,” initiated legal proceedings against the FFF regulation.
