A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has arrived in Pakistan to conduct a comprehensive review of the country’s governance and corruption challenges. The mission, which began meetings with Pakistani officials on Monday, aims to provide technical assistance to bolster Pakistan’s reform initiatives.

The IMF team will specifically focus on strengthening governance frameworks and tackling corruption, playing a crucial role in supporting Pakistan’s wider reform efforts. In addition to these objectives, the delegation will also review the budget proposals for the 2025-26 fiscal year and engage in follow-up discussions about continued technical support for governance-related matters.

During their visit, officials from Pakistan’s Ministry of Finance will collaborate with the IMF team to discuss strategies for improving tax revenue, controlling government expenditure, and finalizing the proposals for the upcoming federal budget. The budget is set to be presented in the National Assembly in early June 2025.

Earlier in March 2025, the IMF recognized Pakistan for its fiscal policy achievements, particularly in reducing public debt, controlling inflation, and improving tax equity. This recognition highlighted the progress made as part of the country’s ongoing economic reforms. Additionally, the IMF and Pakistan reached an agreement in March for a new $1.3 billion arrangement, which is part of the ongoing 37-month bailout program designed to support the country’s economic recovery and reform efforts.
