The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided not to travel to Pakistan for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy, as reported by Indian media on Friday. Instead, they have requested that their matches be played in Dubai, UAE.
This news is disappointing for cricket fans who were looking forward to seeing Indian players compete on Pakistani soil. Sources revealed to the Indian Express that the BCCI had communicated security concerns to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and made it clear that they prefer a neutral venue, with Dubai as the top choice.
The PCB Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, responded to the decision by stating that India shouldn’t expect goodwill from Pakistan after their refusal to visit Lahore for the tournament. He emphasized that while Pakistan has shown positive gestures recently, they are not obliged to always do so. Naqvi mentioned that, despite ongoing reports about India’s hesitance to travel, the PCB had not received any formal communication from the BCCI regarding their stance.
Naqvi indicated that he would consult with the federal government if the BCCI formally confirms its refusal to send the team to Pakistan, allowing the government to make a decision accordingly. He also expressed hope for the Champions Trophy, mentioning that preparations for stadium upgrades and logistics are still underway.
This decision marks a continuation of India’s reluctance to play in Pakistan, as they haven’t participated in an international match there since 2008. Last year, the BCCI skipped the Asia Cup hosted in Pakistan, leading to a different format for the tournament. However, there were recent discussions between Indian and Pakistani officials that had raised hopes of improved cricketing relations.
