Iran Sees Trump’s Win as Chance to Rethink US Policies

On Thursday, Iran viewed Donald Trump’s win in the US presidential election as a chance for the United States to reconsider its past mistakes. Trump, who beat Vice President Kamala Harris and will return to the White House in January, had a tough approach towards Iran during his first term.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, said they have had many bad experiences with US policies in the past. He believed that Trump’s victory was an opportunity to look back and review those policies.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran and the US have been rivals, with tensions reaching new heights during Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021. Many Iranians worry that Trump’s return could lead to even more difficulties for them.

Before Trump’s victory was announced, Iran had considered the US election unimportant. Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani stated that the main policies of both the US and Iran remain unchanged, regardless of who the president is, and plans are in place to ensure that the citizens’ living conditions do not change.

During his last term, Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and imposed strict sanctions on Iran. In 2020, his administration carried out a drone strike that killed a high-ranking Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani, in Baghdad.
