Yemen’s Houthi movement has confirmed that its self-proclaimed Prime Minister, Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi, was killed in an Israeli air strike on Sanaa earlier this week. The strike, carried out by Israeli fighter jets on Thursday, also eliminated several senior Houthi officials, according to both the Houthis and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Reports suggest ministers responsible for foreign affairs, justice, youth and sports, and labour were among the dead, while others sustained serious injuries. The Houthis announced that Deputy Prime Minister Muhammad Ahmed Miftah will assume Rahawi’s position. Rahawi, who took office in August 2024, was largely considered a symbolic figure rather than a key strategist within the movement’s hierarchy.
The Houthi leadership confirmed that its supreme commander Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, along with its defence minister and chief of staff, were not among the casualties. The IDF stated it launched the strike “within hours” of receiving intelligence, and is still assessing the broader impact.

Since the Gaza war began, the Houthis have routinely targeted Israel with missiles and attacked commercial vessels in the Red Sea, prompting repeated Israeli retaliatory strikes on Yemen.
