Jens Stoltenberg, head honcho of NATO, called on Japan to “stick together and remain steadfast” in the face of security risks from China, North Korea, and Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. In Tokyo, he stressed that Beijing is keeping a watchful eye on the events in Ukraine and may draw conclusions that affect its future choices. Stoltenberg spoke alongside Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during his trip to Asia to fortify bonds with democratic allies.
“What’s occurring in Europe today could happen in East Asia tomorrow. So, we must stand united and unshakeable, supporting each other for freedom and democracy,” Stoltenberg said.
Both Stoltenberg and Kishida expressed concern over the escalating cooperation between China and Russia, saying in a joint statement, “We’re troubled by Russia’s escalating military alliance with China, including through joint operations and exercises near Japan.”
The previous day in Seoul, Stoltenberg urged South Korea to ramp up military support for Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia almost a year ago. However, on Tuesday, he applauded Japan for its “solid stance” and “considerable support” for Ukraine.
