KARACHI: The Supreme Court expressed its view on Tuesday that the Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) petition against the privatisation of K-Electric was ineffective. The plea was disposed of based on its withdrawal.

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Ayesha A Malik, heard the plea.

During the previous hearing, the CJP stated that the Supreme Court would not intervene in economic matters, as it lacks expertise in the field. The petitioner’s counsel was advised to approach the relevant high court for the issue.

In today’s hearing, CJP Bandial asked JI’s counsel Rashid Rizvi if he wished to proceed with the petition. To this, Rizvi responded, “Yes, this petition is still pertinent. It is affecting over 20 million citizens of the city.”

“It is not within our jurisdiction; you must consider the law,” remarked the CJP. Justice Minallah added that the plea was non-maintainable under Article 184. “When parliament fails, only the court remains,” said Rizvi.
